Fringe Benefits; To Tax or Not to Tax

Employers provide many benefits for their employees, of which most are not considered taxable income. However, there are a few items that are taxable and can sometimes slip under the radar!  Is your Accounts Payable office reimbursing employees for items on an expense report? Do they know which items could have tax consequences? Do you provide relocation benefits? Is AP reimbursing for non-qualified items?  Your obligation in Payroll is to have a clear communication path to your AP department to capture items that you may have to post on your W2 filings.  An IRS Audit could cost your employer thousands of dollars in penalties and taxes for tax errors!

Join us as we walk through the various types of benefits and how to properly tax fringe benefits!

3 things attendees will learn by attending this webinar.

At the end of this seminar participants will be able to:

    • Determine taxability of certain fringe benefits
    • Understand importance of a communication strategy for fringe benefits
    • Review current policies in determining if fringe benefits are being calculated correctly

Our presenter will be past GMPA president Brenda Sabin.

Brenda Sabin joined Hickok & Boardman HR Intelligence in 2013 and has worked in the field of human resources and payroll for over twenty seven years. Currently she is the Director of HR Compliance & Payroll Solutions bringing knowledge, experience and leadership to clients and HR and Payroll associations across the State of Vermont and New England.

Previous to Hickok & Boardman she was the Operations Director at an HR compliance database organization, and prior to that, she was the Payroll and Benefits Manager for a major and rapidly growing national company based in Vermont. This growth and its ensuing challenges enabled Brenda to gain expertise in benefits, payroll, regulatory compliance, and best practice procedures in HR administration.

After leaving the corporate world in 2003, Brenda founded Key Concepts, LLC, a training and consulting business which she successfully ran for 10 years. Key Concepts, LLC was an organization dedicated to providing a wide array of benefits, communications and awareness programs for employees of small to medium sized organizations.

Brenda has traveled the US for companies such as National Seminars providing training on payroll and taxation of fringe benefits. She also teaches Payroll 101 courses and is a speaker at many payroll conferences. She is the Past President of the Green Mountain Payroll Association. She is also an active member of the Government Relations Task Force connected to the IRS for any updates and comments on new procedures and taxability discussions.

Brenda currently holds the certifications as a Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), a Senior Professional HR (SPHR), a SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and a Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist (CHRS).
